You can print images in shades of gray (grayscale) as well as in black and white. To print grayscale images, choose 'Grayscale' from the pop-up menu in the Print dialog.
You can share your printer with other users on an AppleTalk network. You can share your printer with as many users as you like without adding any extra hardware or software to your system.
For more information about these and other features of your StyleWriter II, see your StyleWriter II User's Guide.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Your StyleWriter II printer works with Macintosh computers with system software version 7.0 or later installed, and that have hard disk drives with sufficient available space (the Installer will check the space on your hard drive and tell you if you don't have enough).
You can also use your StyleWriter II if you have system software version 6.0.7 or later installed on the hard drive of your Macintosh.
LOW MEMORY MACINTOSHES
If your Macintosh with System 7 has just 2 megabytes of RAM (or 1 megabyte with System 6), you may occasionally run short of memory. You know you are low on memory when some documents do not print, when printed document doesn't look correct (such as: text looks jagged instead of smooth), or when you see “out of memory” messages on your screen. To make more memory available, try these suggestions:
• Open only one application at a time.
• Print color or grayscale images in Black and White mode.
• Make sure the RAM cache is turned off or set as low as possible. (To adjust the RAM cache, use the Memory control panel in System 7, or the Control Panel in System 6.)
• If you're using System 6, make sure MultiFinder is turned off. (To turn MultiFinder off, choose Set Startup from the Special menu. In the dialog box that appears, choose Finder. The next time you start up or restart your Macintosh, Multifinder will be turned off.)
• If you are using System 7, try printing with background printing turned off.
• "Init" files in the system folder usually use up some of your Macintosh's RAM. Remove "init" files to free up some memory.
• If you get "not enough memory" errors while printing to a shared StyleWriter II, then turn background printing off.
If you have only 2 megabytes of RAM (or 1 megabyte with System 6), you may want to add more in order to make your Macintosh work more effectively. See the information about service and support that came with your computer to find out who to contact about adding RAM to your Macintosh.
INSTALL YOUR STYLEWRITER II SOFTWARE LAST
To be sure your StyleWriter II has all the necessary software, install (or re-install) your StyleWriter II software after you upgrade your system software version 7.1 or earlier, or after you install AppleTalk® Internet, EtherTalk®, or TokenTalk software.
PRINTING TIPS
Follow these suggestions to get the best results with your StyleWriter II:
• It is recommended that you select Print Quality as Normal and Image as Grayscale in the Print Dialog box because it gives you the best results with the fastest printing. (This is the default setting within the Print Dialog box)
• If you are using System 6 multifinder or System 7, it's a good idea to use background printing. This allows you to continue working on your Macintosh while the StyleWriter II is printing. (To turn on Background Printing, choose the Chooser from the Apple menu. In the Chooser window, click the StyleWriter II icon, then click the On button next to Background Printing.)
• Connect the StyleWriter II to the Modem port. (To use the new Sharing feature of the StyleWriter II, you use the Printer port to connect your Macintosh to an AppleTalk network.)
• If you use the StyleWriter II with a PowerBook 100, you must connect it to the Printer port; the Modem port is internal on the PowerBook 100. Be sure to select the Printer serial port in the Chooser after you install.
• When sharing your printer, give it a unique name so that other users can tell which shared printers are listed in their Choosers.
• Close the Chooser after making any printer set-up changes.
• If you have Sharing turned on, and you re-install your StyleWriter II software, you must turn Sharing on again.
• If you have problems sharing your printer, then reinstall your printer software.
• You must have LaserWriter version 7.0 or later to work with the Print Monitor that is installed with the StyleWriter II driver.
• If you cancel the installation of the StyleWriter II driver/fonts, you must restart your Macintosh to share your printer.
USING THE STYLEWRITER II WITH APPLICATION PROGRAMS
Some application programs do not yet take advantage of the StyleWriter II's new features. If you experience problems with your application programs, contact the publishers of the programs. Here are some suggestions for getting the best results from your application programs:
4th Dimension version 2.2.3 (Acius)
Some documents print best at 100% scaling and in portrait (tall) orientation.
Adobe Illustrator 3.2
For best results, use Background printing and print at 100% scaling.
Adobe Illustrator documents placed into other applications (for example, PageMaker) may print with gray outlines.
Canvas 3.0 (Deneba)
For best results, upgrade to version 3.0.4 or later. If you use Canvas 3.0.4 to create an image that has color patterns, print the image from Canvas rather than from another application. (If you import the image to another application, the gray areas representing the colors may show moiré patterns. You can print from Canvas 3.0.4 with no problems.)
DeltaGraph Pro 2.0 (DeltaPoint)
If you print charts, the axis labels may not print correctly with Background printing turned off.
Freehand 3.0 (Aldus)
For best results, print at 100% scaling.
MacDraw Pro 1.5v1 (Claris)
Color patterns printed in grayscale may show moiré patterns. To avoid moiré patterns, use solid colors instead of color patterns. Solid colors are chosen from the "Claris Colors" pallet of colors, which is to the left of the pattern pallet.
MacWrite II 1.1v3 (Claris)
The Collate option in the Print dialog box does not work.
Microsoft Excel 4.0
To print using grayscale, set two options in the Print dialog box: choose "Grayscale" from the Image pop-up menu, and turn on "Print Using Color."
Microsoft PowerPoint 2.01f
Handouts and Notes from landscape (wide) documents may not print correctly.
Microsoft Works 2.0e
For best results, upgrade to version 3.0 or later. If you use version 2.0e, turn off Background Printing in the Chooser.
PixelPaint 2.1 (SuperMac)
For best results, print at 100% scaling or less.
Quark XPress 3.11
Large point ATM font sizes (over 18pt) may be clipped in portrait(tall).
Quicken 3.0 (Intuit)
When printing in low memory you may fail to print. Try the low memory suggestions listed above.
ReadySetGo 4.5 (Letraset)
For best results, set your monitor to 256 colors or less.
TeachText (Apple Computer)
If you get a system error 25, try the low memory suggestions listed above.
WordPerfect 2.1
For best results when printing objects from the drawing layer, turn on Background Printing.
